Strawberry field, a tribute to John Lennon

imagesTraining starts at 19.30 o’clock, at the meeting point at Strawberry Field, which is situated at the entrance to Central Park West from 72th street. I arrive ten minutes before in order to get acquainted with the group and with the personal trainer. I also have time to admire the small space dedicated to the memory of John Lennon, the Beatles leader killed by a madman in 1980. I observe the characteristic mosaic floor with the word ‘Imagine.’ The garden is alsodecorated with plants from more than 160 countries worldwide.

In the October 9, 1985 -on the 45th anniversary of Lennon Birthday – this place was officially dedicated  to the artist. as a place of  peace. His wife Yoko Ono, worked with landscape architect Bruce Kelly and the Central Park Conservancy, to create a place of meditation. The iconic black-and-white mosaic was created by Italian craftsmen and given as a gift from the city of Naples. A designated area in a quiet park, the memorial is shaded by stately American elms and lined with benches. In the warmer months, the flowers bloom throughout the area. Along the path near the mosaic, there is a bronze plaque that lists 121 countries that endorse Strawberry Fields as a Garden of Peace.john lennon

Around the mosaic sitting on the benches, some musicians play songs by John Lennon, in his memory and people passing there, captured by the love and devotion of an icon of the music of our century, follow the music. The musicians beckon me to participate in Peace and Love in this music but I don’t know the songs by heart, except “Imagine”.

Imagine there’s no heaven

It’s easy if you try

No hell below us

Above us only sky

Imagine all the people

Living for today …

Imagine there’s  no countries

It is not hard to do

Nothing to kill or die for

And no religion too

You may say I’m a dreamer

But I’m not the only one

I hope someday you’ll join us

And the world will be as one

Yeah, a fantastic and utopian idea – Imagine this! A world without crime, where there are no barriers because of religion, race, gender, and sexual orientation. But how?  John Lennon is not the only dreamer. Although  many people  dream of this world, unfortunately it remains always,  just a dream!
